The Queer Artist Fund is a groundbreaking initiative by Obodo aimed at supporting and strengthening LGBTQ+ artists in Nigeria. At Obodo, we believe in the transformative power of art and its ability to shape narratives, challenge norms, and foster inclusivity. The fund is dedicated to providing resources and a platform for queer artists to explore, express, and amplify their narratives.

About the program

The Queer Artist Fund seeks to amplify the voices of LGBTQ+ artists in Nigeria, providing a platform for creative expression, dialogue, and community building. We invite artists across various mediums to submit their projects that explore the politics of queerness, challenge societal norms, and contribute to the rich tapestry of cultural production in Nigeria.

Funding information

Seven individual artists will receive financial support up to $3000 to bring their projects to life, along with mentorship, workshops, and opportunities for public exhibition. The fund is open to projects in diverse artistic disciplines, including visual arts, performance, and multimedia.

Theme

Submissions must be original works and should explore the politics of queerness, addressing social change, cultural preservation, and the amplification of queer experiences in Nigeria. The focus is on artists using creative expression to explore, critique, and challenge societal norms, prejudices, and discriminatory practices related to LGBTQ+ individuals.

Eligibility criteria

  • Open to artists based in Lagos and its environs.
  • We welcome artists at all stages of their professional lives, from emerging to established.
  • All artistic disciplines are also welcome.
  • Projects should align with the fund's mission of exploring the politics of queerness.
  • Complete the submission process for the Program through this website and its interface, submitting up to five attachments that best represent your artistic practice.

Selection process

  • Submissions will be evaluated based on creativity, originality, and alignment with the fund's mission.
  • A panel of cross-disciplinary experts, professionals, and artists will review and curate the selected cohort.
  • The selection of the seven members of the cohort will be based on the materials and responses provided by the Artist Applicant in their submission.
  • Applicants recognize that the evaluation process involves objective assessments of submitted materials by the panel members and hereby consent to abide by the decisions reached by the panel.
